The meaning of the word was "a residence where people go to feast, to rest, to eat it's fill". Note that repaire did not have the meaning it has today (haunt of criminals). The surname refers to the person who originates from the place of La Gazaille, at Carsac-Aillac (24), Perigord, France.Īccording to what I have found about the origin of the name Gazaille, it is a toponym refering to a meadow close to Saint Rome, commune of Carsac, Canton of Carlux 1, Ancien repaire noble. Therefore, it is a toponym that took the meaning of grazing. We find in the notary contract the legal term "Contrat de gazaille" or "Bail en gazaille", meaning to put cattle on a feedlot. The surname GAZAILLE, mostly borne in Perigord and Limousin, evokes a kind of sharecropping regarding livestock.
